About

The Night Flow Report is written by Dale Prescott, a retired structural engineer in Colorado who spent three years getting up two to four times a night. He is not a doctor. The site covers nocturnal urination, weak flow and what men over 50 can try at home, in plain language.

Why this site exists

I got up to use the bathroom two to four times a night for the better part of three years, and I told myself the whole time that it was just age.

I did what most men do. I stopped drinking water after eight. I cut the evening coffee, then the evening beer. I bought a bottle of saw palmetto at the pharmacy, took it for three weeks, felt nothing and threw it in a drawer. I read threads on Reddit at two in the morning, which is its own kind of answer about how I was doing.

What I did not do was see a doctor, because I was sure he would tell me it was my age, and because I was afraid that if it was not my age he would tell me something worse.

What finally moved me was not medical. My wife Marianne started sleeping in the guest room. Not out of anger. She just wanted to sleep. That was the week I decided to take it seriously.

Who I am

My name is Dale Prescott. I am 63, I live in Fort Collins, Colorado, and I spent 34 years as a structural engineer before I retired.

I am not a doctor and I will never pretend to be one. What I am is a man who treated his own problem the way he would have treated a beam showing fatigue. I wrote things down. I counted. I compared. I kept a note on my phone every morning with one number on it, how many times I had been up, and I kept it for months before I changed anything, so I had a baseline to compare against.

That is the only authority I claim here, and I think it is worth more to you than a stock photo of somebody in a white coat.

How this site is written

Rules I hold myself to, on every page:

  • No claim that any product treats, cures or prevents a disease. Supplements support function. That is a different sentence and it matters.
  • No promised results and no promised timelines.
  • Cancer is never used as a selling argument. It is the fear most of us actually carry, and where it comes up I answer it with accurate information and a plain statement of when to go see a urologist.
  • Where a number comes from a manufacturer rather than from independent testing, the page says so.
  • I say when I do not know something.

How the site makes money

Some links on this site are affiliate links, which means The Night Flow Report earns a commission if you buy through them. It costs you nothing extra.

That arrangement is worth being honest about, so here it is plainly: it pays for the site, and it is also a reason to read anything I write about a product with your own judgment switched on. I try to earn that by telling you what the complaints say before I tell you what the benefits are.

One thing I would tell you

I waited almost two years to get examined, and it is the only part of this whole business I regret. Trying things at home and seeing a doctor are not in competition with each other. Do both.
